This course employs a Religious Studies perspective, introducing key actors of the East Asian new religious panorama. The selected new religious movements (NRMs) will be explored in their historical, doctrinal, and ritual dimension with a particular focus on the millenarian underpinnings, drawing richly on textual and video sources. Theoretical aspects as well as periodisation and classification schemes of East Asian NRMs will be discussed. Students will be familiarised with crucial issues in the study of East Asian NRMs, which lies at the intersection of NRM Studies, East Asian Studies, and Millenarian Studies.
