Seminarium Zakładu Historii Religii: In the Grip of Competing Beliefs, Ideologies and Identities: The Alevis of Dersim in Turkey

Zakład Historii Religii Instytutu Religioznawstwa UJ oraz Pracownia Studiów Kurdyjskich Instytutu Orientalistyki UJ uprzejmie zapraszają na seminarium pt. In the Grip of Competing Beliefs, Ideologies and Identities: The Alevis of Dersim in Turkey, które poprowadzi profesor Candan Badem.

29.01.2021 (piątek), godzina 15:00

ABSTRACT:

This one-hour online seminar will briefly introduce the historical formation and basic tenets of the specific Alevi/Kızılbaş belief system and identity in the Dersim area from the Ottoman times till the present. I will analyze effects of Turkic and Armenian paganism, Christianity, Christian heterodoxy, Sufism and Safevi Shiism in its formation. I will then describe how Dersim Alevis were perceived as a threat by the authorities, and the remedies offered by Ottoman statesmen, which were examples of Ottoman orientalism. The seminar will also discuss why the secular Turkish republic also viewed them as a threat and why the secular state’s massacre against Dersim Alevis took place in 1938. Finally, I will try to evaluate how global and local (ethnic) ideologies affected Dersim Alevis, how modernity and urbanization transformed traditional Alevism and what constitutes their identity today.
