The BuddhistRoad Project: Collaborative Research on Buddhism in Pre-modern Multicultural Societies in Eastern Central Asia

 

The ERC funded research project BuddhistRoad creates a new framework to enable understanding of the complexities in the dynamics of cultural encounter and religious transfer in pre-modern Eastern Central Asia. This region was the crossroads of ancient civilisations. Its uniqueness was determined by complex dynamics of religious and cultural exchanges gravitating around an ancient communication artery, known as the Silk Road. Buddhism was one major factor in this exchange; its transfer predetermined the transfer of adjacent aspects of culture.

The presentation will give an overview of the research agenda, project organization, research results, and benefits of ERC funding lines.

Prof. Carmen Meinert jest zastępczynią dyrektora Centrum Studiów Religioznawczych (CERES) przy Uniwersytecie Ruhry w Bochum, kierowniczką Katedry Religii Środkowoazjatyckich CERES, oraz kierowniczką projektu BuddhistRoad. Wykorzystuje wykształcenie w dziedzinach buddologii, tybetologii i sinologii – zdobyte na uniwersytetach w Bonn, Hamburgu, Pekinie, Chengdu, Wiedniu i Essen – do interdyscyplinarnej integracji porównawczych badań nad religiami Azji Środkowej.
