Abstract:

Unlike the development of horror films in Western Hollywood, horror films in Asia, particularly East Asia, are not just expressions of socio-cultural anxieties. They also embody the issues of subjectivity related to history, tradition, and politics that different countries and regions face in the modernization process. These issues continue to be expressed through the spectral symbols in various horror films, conveying deep-seated grievances and resentments. This lecture mainly focuses on the portrayal of female figures in Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese horror films, examining the underlying social anxieties from a religious perspective
