Trolls in Germanic Mythology, Saga Literature – and the Present – open lecture by Prof. Rudolf Simek

Starting with the oldest concepts of otherworldly beings in lower mythology of the Scandinavian Viking Age and Middle Ages, the paper looks at the various functions of Trolls in Old Norse Mythology and Literature, and tries – in only anecdotal examples – to trace their history to the 21st century, showing how resistant these beings are both to religious changes as well as literary tastes.

Rudolf Simek – Professor of Ancient German and Nordic Studies at the University of Bonn. An expert in the Old Germanic religion, Old Scandinavian literature, Arthurian legends, medieval cosmology and demonology, as well as Catholic theology and missiology. Religious studies scholar, Old Norse philologist and medievalist. Author of over 30 books (including Lexikon der germanischen Mythologie, Religion und Mythologie der Germanen, Götter und Kulte der Germanen, Monster im Mittelalter), several hundred articles, publisher of the interdisciplinary series Studia Medievalia Septentrionalia.

Trolle w mitologii germańskiej, sagach staroskandynawskich i obecnie – wykład otwarty prof. Rudolfa Simka

Rudolf Simek – profesor filologii starogermańskiej i skandynawistyki starszej Uniwersytetu w Bonn. Znawca religii starogermańskiej, literatury staroskandynawskiej, legend arturiańskich, średniowiecznej kosmologii i demonologii, a także katolickiej teologii i misjologii. Religioznawca, filolog staronordycki i mediewista. Autor ponad 30 książek (m.in.
