Body and Embodiment in the Middle Bengali Imaginary Workshop

W dniach 16-18 stycznia 2023 w Instytucie Religioznawstwa Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego odbył się warsztat/seminarium ‘Body and Embodiment in the Middle Bengali Imaginary Workshop”.

Wydarzenie miało miejsce w ramach inauguracji realizacji projektu badawczego pod tym samym tytułem, zorientowanego na badania i tłumaczenia wybranych tekstów w języku średniobengalskim. Projekt jest realizowany w obrębie POB Heritage ([H.2.11.2021] Grupy badawcze w POB Heritage, edycja 2). Wiodącym tematem projektu są pojęcia ciała i ucieleśnienia, które możemy znaleźć w przednowoczesnej literaturze bengalskiej, w tak różnych nurtach jak wisznuizm gaudiya, śaktyzm, regionalna literatura epicka, hāṭha-joga czy tantra. Uczestnicy wygłosili referaty przedstawiając swoje badania i plany dotyczące uczestnictwa w projekcie. Odrębną część spotkania stanowiła lektura tekstów źródłowych w języku średniobengalskim.

Organizatorami wydarzeniami byli: Robert Czyżykowski (Instytut Religioznawstwa UJ) i Lucian Wong (Oxford Center for Hindu Studies, Oxford University, UK). Warsztat został finansowy wsparty przez Oxford Center for Hindu Studies, natomiast gospodarzem wydarzenia był Instytut Religioznawstwa UJ. Kolejne aktywności projektu będą finansowane ze źródeł Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w ramach programu POB Heritage.

On 16-18 January at the Institute of Religious Studies of the Jagiellonian University a workshop/seminar 'Body and Embodiment in the Middle Bengali Imaginary Workshop' took place. The event took place as part of the inauguration of the research project of the same title, which focused on the research and translation of selected texts in Middle Bengali. The project is implemented within POB Heritage ([H.2.11.2021] Research groups at POB Heritage, edition 2). The leading theme of the project is the concepts of the body and embodiment, which can be found in pre-modern Bengali literature, in such diverse currents as Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Śaktism, regional epic literature, hāṭha-yoga or tantra. The participants presented papers that presented their research and their plans for participation in the project. A separate part of the meeting was the reading of source texts in Middle Bengali.

The organizers of the events were: Robert Czyżykowski (Institute of Religious Studies, Jagiellonian University) and Lucian Wong (Oxford Center for Hindu Studies, Oxford University, UK). The workshop was financially supported by the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, while the event was hosted by the Institute of Religious Studies of the Jagiellonian University. Further project activities will be financed from Jagiellonian University as part of the POB Heritage programme.
