Some Observations on the Development of Religious Studies: Methodology, Curricula, and the Cognitive Science of Religion

Dr. Glen A. Hayes, Professor Emeritus of Religion, Bloomfield College of Montclair State University, Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA.  J.P. and Beena Khaitan Visiting Fellow, Oxford Centre of Hindu Studies

Glen A. Hayes went to the Divinity School of The University of Chicago, earning an M. Div. in 1975, and his PhD in History of Religions in 1985. After fieldwork in West Bengal, India---leading to a doctoral thesis on body imagery in Bengali tantric yoga texts---he began a 38-year teaching career at Bloomfield College in the USA.  Over the years he has been active as a scholar with the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and the Society for Tantric Studies (STS). In his talk today, Dr. Hayes will share some of his experiences in university and graduate school, discuss the methodologies of the Chicago school, and suggest how recent developments in the Cognitive Science of Religion, especially Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and Conceptual Blending Theory (CBT) might provide us with new analytical tools in Religious Studies.
